This is the third piece from the Medieval Apocalypse Art Studies series by SHA’ELL and FireSign Studios. Inspired by illuminated manuscript works of the middle ages, this unfolding body of work seeks to capture the unsettling imagery of ancient Christian apocalyptic illustrations.

Blood of the Saints explores the moment where martyrdom becomes a ritualized machine. It features the so-called “Great Harlot” or “Mystery Babylon” riding the Great Beast, “drunk on the blood of the saints”. Note the wonded head of the Beast, the trampled victims and the burning city – a haunting tribute to those who were chosen to be the foundation of the New Kingdom.

Rendered with a focus on rich, visceral crimsons and weathered textures. This canvas is designed to draw the eye, serving as a dark mirror to the viewer’s own reflections on faith and finality.
