This is the second piece from the Medieval Apocalypse Art Studies series by SHA’ELL and FireSign Studios. Inspired by illuminated manuscript works of the middle ages, this unfolding body of work seeks to capture the unsettling imagery of ancient Christian apocalyptic illustrations.

In this study, the First Horseman of the Apocalypse strides forth to conquer the minds of the masses. Note the would-be “saints” in his wake, marching in self-aggrandizing lockstep, their individuality subsumed by the horseman’s will. It is a meditation on the comfort of conformity and the terrifying speed of a righteous crusade.
A striking balance of medieval woodcut aesthetic and modern digital precision. The canvas texture adds depth to the horseman’s path, while the elegant frame provides a stark, modern boundary to this ancient chaotic vision.
